Animal Rescue in Sitia. ARIS.
As a member of the European Union (EU), Greece has signed up to all legislation common in all European countries in respect of animal welfare. Unfortunately Greece lags behind many of it's neighbours in the EU regarding the provision and implementation of animal welfare.
At Property on Crete we are committed to doing what we can to help and support the animals in Sitia.
A Taste of India comes to Sitia.
On Saturday 25th. October we helped to organise a fund raising event in aid of the local Animal Welfare Organisation in Sitia. Held at the Itanos Hotel, over 60 people came along to enjoy an evening of genuine Indian cooking thanks to our friends Bill & Suzi. The evening was a great success and raised 800 Euros for the charity.

Highlight of the evening was a prize draw sponsored by Propertyoncrete.com with the lucky ticket holder winning a flight in a light aircraft for an aerial tour of fantastic East Crete.
Contact us if you would like to know about future fundraising events in the area.
Dolly
We found Dolly in a village not far from Sitia. She was on the street with a very bad injury to her hind leg. What can you do? It is not possible for us to leave an animal like this. After a visit to the vet, injections and instructions on how to dress the wound, we took Dolly into our care.

The remarkable thing to see is how an animal like this can change, from a quiet, timid, frightened thing, as the weeks passed and the leg healed Dolly started to regain her personality. She became alive again, excited and full of life, I am sure she started to smile.
With the help and support of the Animal Welfare Group in Sitia, Dolly (now renamed Debby) has a new home and a new life full of love in Germany. This email was received 08/09/2009
"Debby has found a home very fast, since she is such a lovely and cheerful little dog.
She has been adopted by two women - mother and daughter - and now lives not far from my home in a small town, a rural area with lots of forests and fields.
In her new home, there will always be human companionship, which is most important, and moreover she is going to accompany her owners to running, walking and even horse riding! So she will attend a variing sports programme and experience a lot of diversion, which I'm sure she will love! There are also many dogs around who like to play with her, as she has already happily found out!
She is so playful and enjoys life so much - everybody who met her, while she was at my home, was struck by her lovely character (also myself and my dog Timmy!)
The people who adopted her fell in love with her instantly, due to her merry and lovely nature and her unique appearance (remember her ears)!
Thank you for keeping her safe and healing her hind leg, until she could travel to Germany".
There are many stray animals in Crete and fostering can be difficult, it is very easy to become attached. However when you receive feedback like this it makes it worthwhile. We always try to keep in touch with the new owners of an animal we rescue. If you are moving to Crete think about fostering, it can be very rewarding and makes a huge difference.
Poppy on Crete.
One day I was standing outside of our office in the main road of Sitia. I noticed cars stopping and swerving when all of a sudden this small pup appeared, she trotted past me, into the office, went into the back room, helped herself to food and water and promptly fell asleep.
We always have dog food and water available in the back room of our office as many of the street dogs of Sitia visit us.
Closing time came and Poppy was still asleep so I took her home, what else can you do?
Six weeks later, with the help of Maria and Anna of the Sitia Animal Welfare Group we found a home for Poppy with a family in Germany. We are still in contact with the family, they have a big garden and love Poppy so much. Poppy is very happy.
